When a device starts becoming slow, unreliable, damaged, or simply frustrating to use, replacing it is not always the best first step. A repair may solve the problem, an upgrade may extend the device's useful life, or the device may have reached a point where replacement makes more sense.
This worksheet helps you separate the actual problem from the urge to buy something new. Work through the questions using the device's current condition, expected use, repair or upgrade cost, and the inconvenience of keeping it. The result is a decision framework, not a technical diagnosis or a guarantee about what you should buy.
Avoid starting with the question “What new device should I buy?” Start by describing what is wrong with the device you already have. A slow computer, a nearly full drive, a weak battery, a broken screen, and outdated software can require very different solutions.
The same repair can be reasonable for one person and impractical for another. A computer used for essential work may justify spending more to restore it, while a secondary device used occasionally may not.
Age alone does not determine whether a device should be replaced. Some older devices remain perfectly adequate for their workload, while newer devices can become poor choices when a major component fails or the hardware no longer matches the user's needs.
If a repair is being considered, find out what the actual repair involves and obtain a realistic estimate where possible. A vague assumption that “repairs are expensive” is not enough to make a useful decision.
An upgrade can be useful when the device itself remains suitable but one limitation is holding it back. More storage, additional memory, a replacement battery, or another compatible component can sometimes address the actual problem without replacing the entire device.
One of the most common mistakes is spending money on a component that improves one limitation without addressing the reason the device feels inadequate. For example, adding storage does not necessarily solve a processor limitation, and adding memory will not repair a physically damaged display.
If replacement is being considered, look at the cost of a suitable device rather than simply choosing the newest or most expensive option. The replacement needs to solve the actual problem and meet your realistic workload.
At this point, compare repair, upgrade, and replacement using the same information. The cheapest immediate option is not necessarily the best long-term choice, and the most expensive option is not automatically the most sensible.
Keeping the current device temporarily can also be a legitimate choice. If the problem is minor and the device still handles your workload, replacing it immediately may not provide enough benefit to justify the expense.
The device decision is only one part of replacement. Important files, accounts, application data, passwords, browser information, photographs, licenses, and settings may need attention before an old device is reset or handed over.
